"I was treated to a wonderful day being expertly introduced in the best possible way to spoon making by Annie Slack… being carefully shown so many completely new skills was wonderful. There was a lot more to take in than I even imagined so the way we tackled it was important. We were incredibly skilfully led through the process and it’s left me wanting very much to continue! Some skills really need to be shown - especially when it comes to wielding axes and very sharp knives and gauges! - so many ways of best using the tools, the wood and your hands. I’ve been wanting to work with wood for a long time and this was a perfect beginning for me."

‘'I had an amazing weekend learning how to carve spoons with Annie, I carved a small spoon from cherrywood and a larger standing up one (to be used as a coffee scoop) from sycamore… based on one of Annie’s beautiful designs. I was surprised at how most of the carving was done using the axe, with the smaller knife just for refinement. Annie was such a good teacher and with her clear instruction and advice on holding tools correctly and to most efficient effect, I quickly got over my fear of chopping my fingers off! The carving weekend was at Westdean College … omg I can’t even begin to explain the utter sublime utopia of this place..’
